Various Artists - Tribute to Spacemen 3:
An assortment of late nineties obscure indie
types paying their respects to Spacemen 3. Not really an introduction to the
analgesic world of Spacemen 3, some previous knowledge of the perennial drug
merchants is desirable.
The album starts off with Bowery Electric’s
take on Things'll Never Be The Same. One of my person favourite
Spacemen 3 songs and they do it justice. It has the sonic guitar feedback plus a
Darkside drum shuffle. Asteroid #4’s pastiche in Losing Touch With My Mind
has the haunting paranoia that was the trademark of Spacemen 3. Mogwai’s
Honey was a real surprise , they did not usually have any vocals in
their songs at the time. Arab Strap, well, they sound like Arab Strap.
Controversially, I think that
Accelera Deck’s I Believe It is the best track on there. It was slated
for being heartless, but I would disagree. It has everything you would expect
from a Spacemen 3 classic.
My only grievance is that the majority of
songs covered are from Playing with Fire. Hardly any other albums are
featured. Which is hard to believe because there was not a single duff Spacemen
3 album. It would of been great if previous tributes could of been included.
Such as Mudhoney’s Revolution or Chapterhouse’s Losing Touch With
My Mind.
